The Giants ultimately failed to progress to the play-offs, but still contributed to some eye-catching numbers during the sixth edition of the tournament.
African fans demonstrate their passion for basketball
The opening phase of the 2026 BAL season set several new records to cement the belief that basketball is on its way to becoming big news in Africa. The Kalahari Conference attracted 38,677 fans to games in Pretoria, South Africa, making it the most attended conference phase in BAL history.
Games in the Sahara Conference in Morocco took the overall tally of fans in attendance to almost 75,000, further highlighting the sport’s popularity.
BAL games also generated a 1,000 percent year-on-year increase in total watch time online. The competition reached fans in 214 countries and territories, including all 54 countries in Africa.
Digital reach also hit new heights during the Sahara Conference in Rabat. The fixture between Club Africain and Al-Ahly Egypt recorded more than 330,000 viewers on the league’s official YouTube broadcast.
This made it the most watched game in BAL streaming history, and the enthusiasm for the competition extended onto other digital platforms.
BAL’s social media channels generated more than 722 million views, a record for group phase play. The post-play-off figures could be more than one billion. Reputable basketball betting platforms were inundated with wagers on BAL fixtures, highlighting the growing popularity of the sport across the continent.
The betting industry was not alone in benefiting from an uptick in engagement during a tournament which is a partnership between the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) and NBA Africa.
NBA stars help to raise the BAL’s global profile
The presence of eight former NBA players helped to raise the global profile of the 2026 BAL season.
Axel Toupane was the standout name on the list, becoming the first NBA champion to play on the league having won the title with the Milwaukee Bucks in 2021.
Toupane was part of the ASC Ville de Dakar which progressed to the play-offs, but they were ultimately eliminated by Al-Ahly Egypt.
Their talented roster includes Kevin Murphy, who was selected with the 47th overall pick in the 2012 NBA draft by the Utah Jazz.
Toupane, Murphy and the rest of the former NBA players made the BAL more appealing to sponsors. A record 22 marketing, merchandising and institutional partners supported the league this season.
They include South African Tourism, Amazon Web Services, Rwanda Events, Qatar Foundation, PUMA, SN InBev, Wilson and the French Embassy of Senegal.
Given the success of this year’s competition, more major organisations are expected to jump on the bandwagon for the next edition in 2017.
