ASA begins search for permanent CEO as James Moloi matter nears conclusion

Athletics South Africa has officially started the process of finding a permanent Chief Executive Officer, with suspended president James Moloi's disciplinary proceedings expected to be finalised later this month.

Acting president John Mathane has confirmed to SABC Sport that the federation has already advertised the CEO position as part of efforts to strengthen leadership at the organisation.

“We have advertised a vacancy for the CEO position, I can confirm that and ASA has money to pay for the CEO,” said Mathane.

The role has been filled in an acting capacity by Terence Magogodela for the past few years, with the search for a permanent chief coming at an important time for South African athletics as the federation looks to build stability and prepare for major competitions.

At the same time, attention remains on the future of Moloi, who has been sidelined from all duties for the past seven months.

Mathane says the matter is now nearing its conclusion and should be wrapped up before the end of the month after consultations with various stakeholders, including SASCOC, the Sports Ministry and ASA’s council structures.

“The board of ASA is not divided, but there may be different views on the matter. The suspension of the president will be addressed later this month," he added.

"We must allow the due process to take place because he is expected to appear before the disciplinary committee, and the matter should be close to finality by the end of the month."

According to Mathane, who took on the acting presidency upon Moloi's suspension in November last year, the disciplinary hearing will ultimately decide whether Moloi returns to his position as ASA president or if the federation moves in another direction.

“Whether he comes back or not will be determined by the hearing process. For now, the president remains suspended, and we should leave it at that,” he concluded.

Mathane also moved to calm speculation of divisions within ASA leadership, insisting that while administrators may hold different opinions, the federation remains united in ensuring that proper governance procedures are followed.
