The Sasol AmaWheela Boys delivered a commanding 58–46 victory over hosts Angola to book their spot in the last four, where they will face an unbeaten Algeria side later this evening.
Speaking to SABC Sport, Gumbi acknowledged the challenges his youthful squad has faced but commended their resilience and character throughout the tournament.
“The Sasol AmaWheela Boys have shown an impressive fighting spirit. Yes, we’ve lost some games, but we’ve also secured crucial wins. Now, heading into the semi-finals, we just need to be consistent in our performances. The team has been really good throughout the tournament,” said Gumbi.
Gumbi added that the team’s ultimate objective is to win the tournament and secure qualification for the upcoming World Championships, set to take place in Canada from 19 September.
“We are determined to qualify for the World Championships. We know we’ll face tough opponents there, including teams like Algeria and Morocco. However, we have players with international experience who are in good form, and that will be crucial for us,” added Gumbi.
The coach further highlighted his satisfaction with the squad’s youthful core and the combinations that have emerged during the competition. He noted that while the team has displayed strength and control, Nigeria proved to be one of their toughest opponents.
“I’m very happy with the squad and the combinations we’ve built. We’ve performed well overall, but Nigeria really tested us. They have talented and experienced players, many of whom compete in France,” he expressed.
