The bout lasted the full ten rounds and in the end, Promnick had her hand raised in a fight that went down to the wire. Two of the three judges scored the contest in her favour, and the last judge viewed the fight as a draw.
The first few rounds highlighted a period in which both fighters were visibly nervous and still collecting important data for the latter stages of the fight. After round five, Promnick took the initiative and closed the distance but at times she was caught by Nyanda as she looked to open up and look for the killer blow.
Promnick, under the tutelage of Alan Toweel, has risen to become the youngest female
South African Champion and she did so the hard way. In the build-up to the fight, the undefeated boxer said that “this has been the toughest training camp I’ve ever been through, they just get more and more challenging, and I’m hoping that the champion will give me a test because I need tough tests at this stage of my career.”
Turns out Promnick was correct on both fronts, she endured the toughest and longest fight of her career after conquering a grueling training camp and now she is in a position to celebrate a major milestone in her career and use it as a foundation to build towards even greater accomplishments.
In the hours after the fight, coach Alan said it has always been about trusting the process with such a young talent.
“I was always going to take it slowly with Tyla. I did not want to rush her or put too much pressure on her too early. The main objective was to build her properly, protect her, and make sure she was ready for every step. Winning the South African title is the first goal achieved, but the bigger goal is to keep developing her in the right way.”
The Toweel family have already made a long lasting impact in South African boxing, and it appears as though the Toweel Legacy has extended into women’s boxing in the name of Tyla Promnick.
“What stands out for me is her determination and her love for the sport. She wants to prove what a woman can do in boxing, and she has a very strong mind. She has earned this moment.”
