The 40-year-old remains one of the country’s most decorated runners and insists retirement is the last thing on his mind as he prepares for the Hollywoodbets Durban 10km at Kingsmead Stadium on Saturday.
Speaking at the pre-race press conference, the Hollywood Athletics Club star reflected on his two-decade career that has taken him to four Olympic Games, multiple World Championships, and five Shanghai Marathon victories.
“Many youngsters are racing too often and training too hard, and that leads to muscle strain and long-term injuries,” Mokoka explained.
“If you’re supposed to get 20 to 30 years out of your legs at a high level, you could cut that down to just five years.
"You may be the best in the country or the world now, but once your body breaks down, people will quickly forget about you."
Mokoka also told the national broadcaster that his advice comes from concern over the rising number of injuries and the loss of form he sees among promising runners.
"All I’m saying is, choose your races wisely and don’t overstrain the body. A lot of athletes are chasing money, but the truth is, money will always run faster than you," he warned.
"Race less, stay healthy, and you’ll have a longer career. I always tell people who over-race: let the banks keep the money safe for you – your health and longevity matter more."
The popular race, launched in 2021, has once again sold out with a record 12 000 entries and boasts the richest prize purse for a 10km in South Africa, with R37 500 for the men’s and women’s winners, as well as a R50 000 bonus for breaking the national record.
Mokoka is aiming for a top-10 finish this weekend, and says he is excited to test himself against the younger generation of runners.
