Spar Challenge curtain raiser matches important for Africa Cup build up

South Africa men goal shooter Lutendo Maiwashe says the ongoing test series against Zimbabwe is key to help gauge the players ahead of the Africa Cup.

The national men’s netball team has opened their three-day series with a convincing 51-36 win against their Zimbabwean counterparts on Thursday at the Ellis Park Arena.

Speaking to SABC Sport, Maiwashe says the technical team is at work, discovering some winning combinations as the team rebuilds ahead of the Africa Cup

“I think Zimbabwe is the best team to test us ahead of the Africa Cup. They are a strong team and know how to perform well in big competitions. And I believe it will take such games to get us ready to play against some of the best teams in Africa,’’ said Maiwashe.

The series between the two neighbouring countries serves as curtain raiser matches for the Spar Challenge, where the Proteas are taking on Malawi Queens.

Maiwashe has praised Netball South Africa for the inclusion of men's netball in the three-day test series.

“I would like to thank Netball South Africa for allowing us this platform to play curtain raiser matches for our women’s national team. It shows that we also matter, and this platform will help give mens netball the coverage it deserves,’’ added Maiwashe.
