The event was originally scheduled to launch this month, but internal divisions within the CGA board reportedly delayed the process.
The iconic race, which features three distances—the 42.2km marathon, 21.1km half marathon, and 10km event.
According to our source, the race may be rescheduled to either to the end of November or the first week of December due to the upcoming G20 Summit set to take place in Johannesburg.
“No one is allowed access to the entire precinct ahead of the G20 Summit. Final preparations for the race must be completed regardless of whether the date changes or not. The organizers are working tirelessly, and the confirmed date will be announced by the end of the month. Ideally, the race will be held at the end of November,” said the source, who is involved in race logistics.
“A certain group is attempting to exploit the current turmoil at CGA to cancel the Soweto Marathon,” a source told SABC Sport.
“There are rumours circulating that the 2025 edition has been cancelled, but that’s completely false. The same group tried to stop the race last year and didn’t succeed. The clubs have now agreed to establish a new NGO to take charge of the event, and that process is already underway—it should be finalised within a week or two.
An official announcement will be made soon confirming our readiness, along with the date for the race launch.”
Last year’s Soweto Marathon was launched at Nasrec in July, despite efforts to have it cancelled — and ultimately, the race went ahead as planned.
While the People’s Race continues to be surrounded by internal disputes and controversy, a reliable source has indicated that the 2025 edition is expected to be launched next month. “
By the end of next week, there will be movement around the Soweto Marathon. No matter how dark things may seem, the race is going ahead. The clubs will never allow it to be cancelled,” the source insisted.
