High Performance Manager Leon Fleisher has confirmed to SABC Sport that the national Olympic body will officially announce the incentives in June, as preparations gather pace.
Fleisher revealed that SASCOC is targeting a lean, highly competitive squad of around 109 elite athletes for the showpiece in Glasgow, scheduled to run from 23 July to 2 August.
The organisation has already submitted its proposed incentive structure to the government, with athletes expected to be rewarded for podium finishes — continuing a long-standing tradition of honouring gold, silver, and bronze medallists.
"I can't comment on that because we are currently in the application phase, and I think that will be announced on the 24th of June if there will be an incentive," said Fleisher.
"We definitely want there to be an incentive for our bigger events: our Commonwealth, Olympic, and Paralympic Games. It 's nice to have that incentive. I think the last time we had R100,000 for gold, R50,000 for silver , and R20,000 for bronze . It would be very nice if we could match that, but that's above my pay grade. But yeah, I would love to have that."
Fleisher also shed light on logistical changes, noting that the Glasgow Games will not feature traditional athletes’ villages — a shift that will impact how Team SA operates on the ground.
The seasoned administrator, who served as Team SA’s chef de mission at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, added that flexibility will be key, with several federations already requesting tailored travel plans for their athletes.
With planning intensifying behind the scenes, all eyes will now be on June — when SASCOC finally reveals what’s at stake for South Africa’s medal hopefuls.
