Netball South Africa to unveil new coach in March

Netball South Africa (NSA) president Cecilia Molokwane has confirmed to SABC Sport they will unveil the new Proteas head coach in March 2024.

This follows the retirement of Norma Plummer after the Proteas' tour to England where they suffered a 2-1 defeat in the three-match test series against the Roses.

Plummer’s departure has left a vacant position within the Proteas set-up, prompting NSA to open its coaching applications.

Molokwane has confirmed the chosen candidate would be a South African coach, adding that the federation has received numerous applications. Notably, Jenny Van Dyk and Roxenne Matthyse accompanied the Proteas to New Zealand and England under Plummer’s mentorship to observe her coaching methods.

While Proteas assistant coach Dumisani Chauke was part of the 2023 World Cup squad and the two tours, Molokwane emphasised the coaching position is open to any local coach, with no guarantees for anyone.

“We’ve initiated the search for a head coach by opening the position for applications. Our approach is meticulous this time, learning from the errors of four years ago when we rushed the selection process," explained Molokwane.

"Starting in January, our structured program for appointing the new coach includes director-led interviews, psychometrics tests, policy clearance, practical assortments, and thorough background checks. The comprehensive spans from January to March, ensuring a thorough evaluation," she continued.

“Upon successful completion, the chosen coach will be granted a four-year contract with the mission to guide us to the 2027 World Cup in Australia and maintain our standing at number 5 in the World Rankings.

"It’s crucial to note that the directorial panel selects the coach, and I, Molokwane, finalize the appointment. No one is guaranteed the position; it’s a decision that I will make with utmost scrutiny,” Molokwane told the national broadcaster.

Molokwane had already appointed Dorette Badenhorst as head coach, who was also Plummer's assistant. Molokwane later regretted his decision and is resolved not to make the same mistake again.

“There is no predetermined candidate for this position. In 2019, we had a clear preference for Dorette right from the start, and we didn’t conduct interviews. This time around, we’re open to letting the most qualified candidate emerge victorious, with the stipulation that they must be South African.

Once the festive season concludes, our focus will shift towards securing the appointment of the new coach,” emphasised Molokwane.
