Netball boosted by cash injection

Gauteng MEC is putting more effort towards developing netball in the province, following the receipt of a cash injection from the Department of Sports at the start of December.

Sports Minister Nathi Mthethwa has committed R90 million towards the development of various sports codes across the nine provinces, for the next three years. Each province will share R30 million annually to help improve their sports structures.

Newly appointed Gauteng MEC for sports, arts, and culture Morakane Mosupyoe confirmed to SABC Sport they have received their first share and want Netball South Africa to be the benefactors in the long run.

“We plan to build the netball courts in the townships by building one court in each of the five regions in Gauteng. The R90 million is mainly for multi-sporting codes, but the big chunk is going towards netball,” Mosupyoe said.

The former social development MEC in Gauteng believes netball is heading in the right direction, and her department will donate money supporting the 2023 Netball World Cup in Cape Town, which starts on 28 July.
