The Olympian is currently at the FISU World University Games in Rhine-Ruhr, Germany, where he ran a time of 46.25 in his heat to qualify for the semifinals tonight.
Speaking to SABC Sport on the sidelines of the track, Pillay insists he wants to now deliver on his promise to take up more responsibility.
"Usually, I'm the junior athlete punching above my weight against the seniors, but now my role in the sport has shifted.
"The pressure is a blessing, and at this level you must know how to handle it," emphasised Pillay.
The 22-year-old adds that running on the international stage is always going to push him out of his comfort zone.
"I do think I am a resilient runner that's why I always embrace championships like this one.
"Back home, and within the team, we support one another, and we push each other in a very constructive way."
Pillay is easily one of the favourites in the 400m at the FISU Games, having gone past the heat with a breeze.
He says he has the appetite to win again.
Additionally, being in Germany is a personal milestone for the UJ student, who is also a former SA 400m champion.
