Leo Mlata reveals the significance of holding the WBC Youth World Crown

Newly crowned WBC Youth Super Bantamweight World Champion, Leo Kaya Mlata explains the weight of his achievement and outlines his next steps.

The boxing technician from Khayelitsha defeated the Democratic Republic of the Congo’s Ardy Katompa in a thrilling exhibition of heart and desire, and when the final bell sounded and the judges scorecards were read, Mlata knew that he had achieved something really special.

In a conversation with SABC Sport, this is what he had to say about his famous victory at Emperors Palace back in October.

“I prepared really hard for that fight because I knew the challenges my opponent would bring, and I’m very happy with my performance on the night and that the judges agreed with me,” Malta said.

The newly crowned champion rose from modest roots and conquered many social obstacles to reach this point in his career. When asked about the significance of his achievement, Mlata said it’s difficult to describe how he’s feeling.

“To be honest, it’s difficult to put into words. I know the journey is far from over, but this title means a lot to me and to the people of Khayelitsha.

“Anything is possible if you put your mind to it,” said the undefeated warrior.

Throughout his boxing journey, from the amateurs to the pro-scene, Mlata has remained grounded and is already focused on his next challenge.

“I’m ready for any opportunity that comes my way, and I’m willing to fight anybody to defend my title or to take other titles. I will just be taking each fight as it comes."
