Labuschagne says the team is confident ahead of Africa Cup title defence

South Africa men’s national team goal attack Shane Labuschagne says the side is highly motivated as they prepare for their Africa Cup title defence in Kenya.

The national team recently secured a convincing 53–43 victory over Eswatini in a Telkom Netball League exhibition match in Pretoria, further boosting their confidence ahead of the continental showpiece.

Speaking to SABC Sport, Labuschagne says every team will be targeting them as reigning champions, but he believes South Africa have a solid plan in place to retain their crown.

“I believe every team will be coming into this edition looking for a win against us. We have dominated this competition for a long time. We look good, we have a plan, and we come into this year’s title defence journey with a winning mentality,” said Labuschagne.

The Men’s Netball Africa Cup is scheduled to take place in Kenya in September, with Netball Africa yet to confirm official dates. Labuschagne says the uncertainty has not disrupted their preparations, as the focus remains on improving as a unit.

“We are focusing on getting better as a team. We want to continue winning friendly matches and preparing for the big tournament,”

The 24-year-old added that momentum from recent performances, combined with strong support, could work in their favour.

“I definitely think we have an advantage when it comes to momentum after winning the Africa Cup again, but we all know this is going to be a very different ball game. We are happy with our current build-up,” added Labuschagne.

World Netball has officially introduced a men’s division into its international competition calendar. Following the inaugural edition, the Men’s Netball World Cup will become a biennial tournament from 2028. Labuschagne believes this development is key to the growth of the game and the long-term development of men’s netball.
