KZNA confirms Steve Mkasi disciplinary hearing is underway

Mkasi, who is serving his second term as the head of the provincial athletics body, was placed on precautionary suspension following a physical altercation with a club member, which was captured on video.

Buthelezi says the matter is now in the hands of the disciplinary committee and that the process must be allowed to run its course.

“Let me put it this way, Steve Mkasi is on a precautionary suspension because his matter is with the disciplinary committee.  

The DC will come up with the results after the investigation,” he told the national broadcaster.

With the matter still under investigation, Buthelezi says it would be unfair to pre-judge Mkasi before he has had an opportunity to respond to the charges.

“Let me stop there because I don’t want to pre-judge the matter. It is sub judice,” he added.

Buthelezi confirmed that a couple of sessions have already taken place, with the initiators and presiding officers appointed and information gathering underway.

“Yes, I can confirm that the process has started. We have chosen the initiators and the presiding officers, and they have started gathering some crucial information. So, we can stop there regarding this matter and instead wait for their findings and final outcome,” he said.

KZNA’s board has taken the precautionary step to protect the integrity of the disciplinary process while ensuring that Mkasi receives a fair hearing.

At national level, Athletics South Africa (ASA) president James Moloi remains suspended after being placed on suspension in October 2025.

This means both the provincial and national athletics presidents are currently suspended while their respective disciplinary processes continue.

With both cases still unresolved, South African athletics remains in a period of uncertainty, with the hope that the matters will be concluded before the end of the year.
