Karla Pretorius raises her hand for the Proteas captain’s armband

Proteas’ stalwart Karla Pretorius has thrown her hat into the ring for the captaincy.

With 13 years of dedication to the team, the 33-year-old Goal Defence stands as a seasoned figure in the squad, poised to take on leadership should coach Jenny Van Dyk select her to follow in the footsteps of retired captain Bongiwe Msomi.

For Pretorius, being entrusted with the captain’s armband would mark a pinnacle in her career, especially as a player from the Free State Crinums.

She eagerly anticipates the opportunity under the guidance of the newly appointed coach.

''Everything needs to be taken into consideration for that role, what I'm able to give at this moment, knowing where I am in my career.

''But if that is what is offered to me, I will definitely consider it,'' said Pretorius.

Pretorius holds optimism that the new coach, Van Dyk, will seamlessly pick up where the previous coach, Norma Plummer left off - guiding the team to even greater accomplishments.

"Now we know who is our coach, who will be taking us forward. I think Jenny will do a great job, she has the knowledge and great understanding of the game and that's what we need.

"I believe she will continue on the great work that was done by coach Norma and Dumisani, I believe she will manage to take us forward,'' added Pretorius.

Pretorius joined the Proteas squad in 2011 - participating in various prestigious tournaments such as the World Cup, Commonwealth Games, and Africa Cup of Nations.

Throughout her tenure, she has carved out a successful career with the senior national team.

''I have been a part of the Proteas since 2011 - it's been 13 years now. My role is not just with the on court stuff but also with leadership. I have a big role to play in making sure that I lead this group to the right direction,'' she concluded.

Returning home after eight years of playing overseas, Pretorius is set to represent the Free State Crinums in the Telkom Netball League this year.
