Jade Atkins shares Netball Youth World Cup expectations

Baby Proteas wing attack Jade Atkins is excited ahead of her first Netball World Youth Cup experience, which kicks off in Gibraltar from 19 September.

The South African Under-21s will depart for London tonight - where they will play a final series of warm-up matches before the start of their 2025 World Cup campaign.

Speaking to SABC Sport, Atkins adds that she looks forward to experiencing netball at a high level.

“I’m feeling a mix of emotions - excitement, pride, and a little bit of nerves, but mostly just gratitude.

“It’s such a blessing to wear the green and gold and to be part of something bigger than myself. I’m really looking forward to stepping onto that court with my teammates, soaking in the international experience, and giving my all.

“This is what we’ve been working so hard for, and now it’s time to show it,’’ said Atkins.

The 19-year-old Tuks Netball rising star shares her personal ambition for the World Cup, stating that she wants to perform well and maintain a level of consistency.

“Personally, I want to leave everything on the court. My goal is to be consistent, confident, and contribute to the team in every way I can - whether that’s through my performance, my energy, or my support.

“I want to grow as a player and as a person, and make sure I walk away knowing I gave it my all in every game and every moment,’’ added Atkins.

Atkins reflects on the success of this year’s Telkom Netball Challenge, where she won best mid-court player in the Cape Town edition.

“The Telkom Netball Challenge was a huge learning experience for me. It gave me a chance to test myself under pressure and to identify both my strengths and areas for growth.

“I took a lot of confidence from that tournament, but also came away with lessons that I’ve carried into training for the World Cup. I believe those experiences have sharpened my mindset and prepared me to take on the challenges of this next stage,’’ she said.

Atkins further shares the significance of the upcoming World Cup experience for the Baby Proteas.

“This World Cup is more than just a competition - It’s a chance for us to bond as a team, grow in experience, and represent South Africa with pride.

“I truly believe this journey will build lifelong memories and push each of us to reach new heights, both individually and together as the Baby Proteas.”
