Hurdler Zeney van der Walt to focus on single event this year

Reigning South African 400m hurdles champion Zeney van der Walt has decided to focus solely on her speciality event and will not compete in the flat 400m during the upcoming track and field season kicking off next month.

As a key member of Team SA’s Africa Games squad set to compete in Accra this March, the 2022 African champion views this competition as integral to her training regimen leading up to the national senior championships in April in KwaZulu-Natal.

Her ultimate goal is to fine-tune her performance for the Olympic Games scheduled for July-August in Paris.

"Not this year again, it was definitely a challenge last year, and I'm happy I did it. The hurdle season is going to be AGN [Athletics Gauteng North] champs, but this year is a bit different because the African Games is early," said van der Walt.

"I just have to keep on doing what I do, love what I do, and never give up on my dreams."

Van der Walt, who clinched a bronze medal at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, is gearing up for a rigorous athletics season ahead and aims to meticulously choose her events to prevent over-racing.

"The Ghana team will be going in March and then African champs in June, and then the Olympics, and this year I'm just going to do the hurdles, so we'll fight for the final and take it from there," she said.
