Steyn, who has competed in Valencia three times and previously set the South African marathon record there—a record later broken by Xaba—spoke to SABC Sport about what the rising star can expect on race day.
Reflecting on her own experiences on the fast and scenic 42.2km course, Steyn believes Xaba, who is preparing for only her second career marathon after winning the Cape Town Marathon last year, has the potential to produce another strong performance.
"I think with Glenrose running in Valencia, that is an ideal opportunity for her. I've competed in the race three times before, and it is absolutely fabulous and very flat for the runners."
The four-time Comrades Marathon champion told the national broadcaster that she will be watching Xaba’s race closely as the South African record holder tests herself against world-class competition for the first time in Valencia.
Steyn emphasised the importance of strategic racing and mental strength, noting that Xaba will face one of the most competitive international fields in road running.
"It is possible that it will be a lot less strategic race, so Glenrose just has to lock into a certain pace, stay with the leading pack, and get the job done."
Steyn revealed that she has chosen not to compete in Valencia this year, instead focusing on the Cape Town Marathon, which she believes has grown into one of the continent’s premier marathon events.
The Olympian said she’s proud that South African runners can now experience a world-class race without leaving the country, calling it a positive step for the growth of local athletics.
As part of her marathon preparations, the 35-year-old participated in the Spar Women’s 10km Challenge at Marks Park in Johannesburg last week.
Although she battled a niggle and missed out on a top-10 finish, Steyn described the experience as an honour and said taking part in local road races remains a vital part of her build-up to major international events.
