Don't go to the Olympic Games to make up numbers – Mike Mbambani

Athletics South Africa (ASA) Coach of the Year Mike Mbambani has issued a sincere appeal to athletes regarding the upcoming Olympic Games in Paris.

In a heartfelt message conveyed during an interview with SABC Sport, Mbambani, also the co-founder of Ikhamva Athletics Club in Gqeberha, implored athletes not to participate merely to bolster numbers.

Instead, he urged them to raise their standards and proudly represent the nation. As the Games are scheduled for July/August in Paris, athletes are fervently striving to secure qualification across various sporting disciplines.

“In an Olympic year, excitement naturally runs high among athletes. Yet, I implore them not to merely fill the ranks. Head to Paris to compete fiercely and make a lasting impression in the games. Victory isn’t the sole aim; it’s about delivering compelling performances. With the spotlight shining brightly on athletics, athletes must bring their best. This year demands a stage illuminated by a remarkable performance from every athlete, not merely attendance in Paris followed by a return home,” emphasized Mbambani.

Mbambani mentors a cohort of athletes in the Eastern Cape, including Thabang Mosiako, Melikhaya Frans, and Simon Sibeko. Frans is poised to accompany Stephen Mokoka in the 42.2km marathon team. To secure his place in Paris, he must achieve a qualifying time of 2 hours, 8 minutes, and 10 seconds. With Bra Mike’s expert guidance, Frans is fully capable of achieving this milestone.

“Back home, our runners are diligently working towards their individual goals. We’re adhering to a tailored program designed for success. With a packed schedule ahead, our athletes must maintain and strive for speedy performances,” Mbambani.
