CGA aims to urgently meet IEC to discuss elections process

Central Gauteng Athletics (CGA) administrator Trevor Fredericks has told SABC Sport that the province is seeking an urgent meeting with the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) to finalise preparations for its upcoming elections.

CGA elections are scheduled for 24 January at Germiston Stadium, following Athletics South Africa’s decision to dissolve the previous board and appoint Fredericks as administrator.

After reopening CGA offices on Monday following the festive-season recess, Fredericks said repeated attempts to reach the IEC have so far been unsuccessful, a situation he admits is causing growing concern.

"For now, everything is supposed to be handed to the IEC but we are battling with the IEC to get confirmation in assisting us. I'm most likely going to have a meeting with them tomorrow,” Fredericks said.

“I'm just waiting for a phone call for a confirmation that we can meet so that we can iron out whatever needs to be ironed out in terms of the process that they are going to be running with."

Fredericks has dismissed suggestions that the approach to the IEC is a last-minute move, insisting that CGA engaged the commission several months ago and received an agreement in principle to oversee the elections.

He says the current efforts are merely follow-ups to ensure the process proceeds as planned.

"Yes, look when we started the process in November, we engaged them and they indicated that they would pay also but now we are just waiting for confirmation, you know because we need to handover the nominations to them so that they can come up with a voter's roll,” he explained.

“We need to handover the credentials to them so that they can know who's eligible to come and vote on that particular day considering that we are 10, 12 days away from the elections."
