Carlos Alcaraz dispatches Tommy Paul to power into US Open quarter-finals

The 23-year-old Spaniard produced another commanding performance at Flushing Meadows, defeating the American 20th seed 6-4, 6-3, 6-4 to reach the quarter-finals.

Alcaraz has dropped just one set in New York and will now face another American, eighth seed Ben Shelton, in the last eight.

The victory was particularly impressive given Alcaraz is playing only his fourth competitive singles match since an absence of more than four months.

His victory over Paul extended his winning streak at Grand Slam tournaments to 18 matches as he continued his rapid return to top form.

"I played my game. I tried to put my style on today's match," said Alcaraz.

"I've been really focused on the recovery with my team, with myself, doing the right things off the court trying to be healthy and in good shape for the next round.

"I'm really happy with the performance today."

Alcaraz has won all three of his tour-level matches against Shelton, who advanced after beating Stefanos Tsitsipas 6-2 6-3 6-4 on Sunday.

Also on Sunday, two other Americans advanced to the US Open quarter-finals in straight sets: Frances Tiafoe beat Daniil Medvedev 7-6, 6-4, 7-6, and Alex Michelsen defeated Tomas Martin Etcheverry 7-6, 6-4, 6-4. 

Second seed Alexander Zverev was another winner, dispatching Alejandro Tabilo 6-2 7-6 (2) 6-2, to stay on course for a potential showdown with Alcaraz in the final.
