Bryan Thysse reflects on SA Light Heavyweight title victory

New South African Light Heavyweight champion Bryan Thysse says they were fully prepared for a drawn out fight as he beat Michael Head by TKO in the ninth round on Saturday.

The highly-anticipated bout between the two South Africans was the headline event on a stacked Golden Gloves card titled ‘Destiny’s Decree’.

The two clashed once before in a four-round fight that Thysse won via split decision in 2022, but this time he left no stone unturned and finished a gritty Head in devastating fashion, saying they prepared to go the distance.

“First of all, I want to thank God for giving me this opportunity and thank you to Michael, for pushing me tonight,” said Thysse.

“It was a very tough fight. We knew that Michael was going to come into this fight with belief, but we trained hard, and we knew we would be successful in the later rounds.”

The Thysse family’s boxing legacy is highly regarded throughout the country, and the 28-year-old realises the significance of adding to that in his own career.

“We did it for the Thysse legacy, for my dad and my brother, and the rest of my family. Neither of us had fought a twelve-round fight before, so we knew that someone was going to break in the early rounds.

“We executed the game plan to perfection. I worked the body shots, and I knew it was only going to be a matter of time before the body shots forced the head to fall,” he concluded.

Thysse will take a well-deserved break after an unforgettable night at Emperors Palace, but is well aware there will be no shortage of contenders for his crown.
