Baby Proteas claim dominant win in Youth World Cup opener against Barbados

Baby Proteas coach Precious Mthembu says it was important to set the tone from the first quarter to claim a dominant 102-27 win over Barbados in the 2025 Netball World Youth Cup opener in Gibraltar.

The South Africa under-21s claimed their fourth straight win over the Caribbean side at Tercentenary Sports Hall on Saturday evening.

Speaking at a post-match presser, Mthembu adds that she is happy that the players executed the game plan to start the tournament on a high.

“What a great performance tonight by our players. I am thoroughly impressed by the player’s energy; they were so focused, and the team worked really hard. I think we executed our game plan very well, especially offensively – we shared the ball very nicely and everyone on court was able to contribute.

“It is games like these that remind one of how and why discipline is important. I am happy that we managed to set the tone very early in the game, and the score did not alter our discipline,” said Mthembu.

Mthembu says that discipline and consistency will be key to help the team remain in the lead when it comes to Pool D, where they are pitted against Fiji, Barbados, Malawi, and Trinidad & Tobago.

“Our opening win is a reminder that we will need consistency and discipline to succeed in this competition. I believe that is what will sustain the team,’’ added Mthembu.

The Proteas will now shift focus to facing Fiji on Wednesday. Mthembu says they will make sure they look into areas where they need to improve ahead of their second fixture.
