Athletics SA CEO Terence Magogodela promises free and fair elections

Athletics South Africa’s acting CEO, Terence Magogodela, has confirmed that everything is in place for the highly anticipated elections scheduled for tomorrow at the Southern Sun Hotel in Johannesburg.

Speaking to SABC Sport, Magogodela assured that the presidential race, contested by incumbent James Moloi, Aleck Skhosana, Shireen Noble, and Harold Adams, will be conducted in a transparent, free, and fair manner.

He emphasized that independent auditors have been appointed to oversee the process, ensuring credibility and fairness for all candidates involved.

"Preparations for the upcoming elections are proceeding very smoothly. We are well on track to host a memorable and engaging event, and in this regard, the independent auditors will oversee the nomination process, the IEC being one of them," explained ASA's CEO.

Despite the disruption caused by Central Gauteng Athletics and Athletics Free State withdrawing their entire nomination lists this week, Magogodela insisted that the elections would go ahead smoothly.

He acknowledged the setback but noted that such challenges are an inevitable part of the process.

"Those are challenges that come with the process of elections, but so far, grievances on behalf of Central Gauteng Athletics have been addressed, and the matter regarding Athletics Free State is very concerning, but it will be sorted out tomorrow," stressed Magogodela.

Each ASA board member present will be entitled to cast one vote, contributing to a total of 12 votes. The 17 provincial federations will each have two votes, amounting to 34 votes.

In addition, six associate members will cast one vote each, adding another 6 votes. Honorary members are not permitted to vote, bringing the overall total number of votes to 68.

With the Annual General Meeting scheduled to begin at 10 a.m., Magogodela anticipates that the entire voting process will be completed by 3 p.m., at which point ASA’s new board will officially be announced to the public.
