Amanda Anisimova's US Open run ends as Anastasia Potapova claims straight-sets win

The 24th-seeded Austrian, who was born in Russia but now represents Austria, prevailed 6-2, 7-5 after taking full advantage of Anisimova's error-strewn display.

The American produced 46 unforced errors as she struggled to find the level that carried her to the US Open final last year.

Anisimova had enjoyed an excellent 2025 campaign, which also included a run to the Wimbledon final, but has found it difficult to maintain that standard this season.

She had already endured a demanding second-round encounter against Austria's Lilli Tagger before facing another difficult test against Potapova.

The match became particularly tense in the closing stages when Potapova, an emotional competitor, reacted angrily after the umpire rejected her appeal over a missed ball that had taken an unusual bounce.

She nevertheless settled herself quickly, winning the next four points to move within touching distance of victory. Anisimova then handed her opponent the match with another errant shot, allowing Potapova to secure her place in the fourth round.

Potapova will next meet either fifth seed and defending French Open champion Mirra Andreeva or Czech player Nikola Bartunkova.
