Sikhosana and British partner Dahnon Ward dominated the doubles competition, losing just three games in two matches en route to securing the title with a convincing 6-3, 6-0 victory over Spanish pair Mario Roque and Enrique Sisca Meseguer.
Speaking to SABC Sport, Sikhosana said he was pleased with his overall performance throughout the tournament.
“It feels amazing to be Madrid Open doubles champion. Winning the title with Dahnon Ward was memorable and very special. I am proud of my overall performance throughout the week,” said Sikhosana.
The 25-year-old says the strong on-court connection with Ward played a key role in their success, despite their first experience playing together.
“We connected really well on the court. It was our first time playing together, but we quickly understood each other’s game," he added.
"The great energy and communication made a huge difference. He’s a great player and I’m happy to share the title with him."
Sikhosana also enjoyed success in the singles competition, finishing runner-up after losing 3-6, 0-6 to Chile’s Alexander Cataldo in the final.
Despite missing out on the singles title, the 25-year-old says he was proud of his efforts having arrived in Madrid just a day before the tournament.
“I am proud of reaching the singles final, although it would have been even better to leave Madrid as a double champion.
"I only arrived a day before the tournament after a long flight and had very little time to acclimatise. I am still proud of how I applied myself throughout the week,” he concluded.
