Dominant Sundowns down Richards Bay to go 10 points clear

Mamelodi Sundowns extended their lead at the top of the DStv Premiership standings with a 2-0 victory over Richards Bay on Friday night.

Cassius Mailula broke the deadlock at the King Zwelithini Stadium ahead of a 66th minute goal from Haashim Domingo to secure the victory.

The result saw the Brazilians move onto 37 points from 15 games, 10 clear of second-placed SuperSport United and 11 ahead of the Natal Rich Boyz in third.

Sundowns were in the attack from the off but Mailula was offside as he tried to latch onto a Neo Maema through ball.

Domingo was then off target with a shot from outside the box before Themba Zwane forced a save with a sharp effort headed towards the top right corner of the net.

Mothobi Mvala was next in with a chance for the visitors but Richards Bay goalkeeper Jamal Salim was equal to the task.

Sundowns continued to look for an opener with Domingo and Zwane a constant threat but the home defence held firm until six minutes before the break when Mailula slotted a right-footed shot into the bottom right corner of the Richards Bay goal.

Teboho Mokoena was first in with a half chance at the start of the second half for the table toppers but placed his effort too high.

Having defended for much of the first half, Yamela Mbuthuma enjoyed a rare chance for the home team on 47 minutes with a shot he placed just wide.

Mailula was off target as normal service resumed for a spell, ahead of a saved shot from Memela from a postive ball forward from Sanele Barns on the hour mark.

A second goal was seemingly always inevitable and Domingo was able to tap home on 66 minutes to realistically put this game to bed.

Richards Bay tried in vain to find a way back into the tie, with Tshepo Mabua and Ovella Ochieng coming closest to finding the target.

But ultimately it was another comfortable win for Sundowns to maintain head coach Rulani Mokwena's winning run.
