We will bounce back – Laura Wolvaardt after England thrashing

Proteas Women captain Laura Wolvaardt says she knows the team will bounce back after a 10-wicket drubbing at the hands of England in their opening game of the ICC Women’s World Cup in India and Sri-Lanka.

The four-time champions had won the toss and put South Africa into bat, and the latter found out exactly why they won all those titles as they bundled them out for a measly 69 runs in just over 20 overs.

Wolvaardt however insists losing the toss at the Barsapara Stadium did not affect their game.

"Nah I wouldn't put it down to the toss, I think they did bowl very well. I think there was a lot of swinging around early. I think Linsey Smith was excellent with the new ball. I think it was one of those days with the ball where top order failed and middle order failed on the same day,” Wolvaardt said.

“Not the ideal way to start a tournament but I do think that we have shown some resilience with the bat in the last 18 months and I'm sure that we will bounce back and come back better in the rest of this competition."

She also couldn’t fault their preparedness for the match and the tournament itself, and says this was just a freak result which they happened to be on the wrong side of. She believes they must get over the setback as soon as possible.

"No, I think our prep has been good, I don't think there were too many demons in that pitch, I think it was just one of those days where everyone went out early and I think that happens in cricket sometimes,” she added.

“I think if you look at the way that they batted, the wicket was alright, it's not a wicket that we are super foreign to. I think we spend a lot of time in these conditions the last couple of months so definitely wouldn't put it on the wicket.

“I think we are much, much better than 69 all out, so yeah, just one of those days. I think as we group we just need to put it behind us as quickly as we can and move forward because if we're gonna take that to the next game it's gonna be a very long tournament for us."
