Bavuma was expected to turn out for the Lions in the 4-Day Series final against the Titans, starting on the 10th of April, but was withdrawn at the 11th hour with news that he had aggravated an old injury. That news shook the cricket world.
This is because South Africa is just under two months away from the all-important match against the Baggy Greens at Lord's in London.
Now according to information from Cricket South Africa, the skipper will not be facing any race against time to regain full fitness.
"It was a precautionary measure for the 4-Day Series final after he experienced discomfort in his left elbow during a gym session. He isn’t in any danger of missing the WTC Final", said CSA to the public broadcaster.
This comes as a huge sigh of relief for both the fans and the player himself. Bavuma will be desperate to lead South Africa to their first major ICC trophy, particularly after enduring heavy criticism for his leadership role in the past.
The 34-year-old first injured his elbow in 2022, and missed the Proteas' tour of England that year as a result. He then aggravated it last year in Abu Dhabi against Ireland, but made a heroic return and scored a couple of centuries against Sri Lanka and Pakistan in the home summer, helping them qualify for the Test Championship decider in June.
Bavuma also recently led South Africa to the semi-finals of the ICC Champions Trophy, where they lost to New Zealand in Lahore.
