After being sent in to bat, the Sunrisers were initially on shaky ground. Quinton de Kock raced to a 33-ball half-century, but wickets fell at regular intervals, leaving the hosts reeling at 90 for 4 in the 11th over. Sussex allrounder James Coles produced a breakthrough performance in just his second game of the tournament. Coming in at number six, Coles immediately steadied the innings.
Combining patience with precision, the 21-year-old struck ten boundaries in a scintillating 61 off 34 balls, forming a vital 88-run partnership with Tristan Stubbs (23 not out) that lifted Sunrisers to a competitive 178 for 5. Contributions from Jonny Bairstow (18) and Jordan Hermann (13) helped bridge the gap before Coles' counter-attacking brilliance took over.
Coles' impact did not end with the bat. His left-arm spin proved pivotal in restricting the Super Kings' chase. He claimed 2 for 34, including the stumping of James Vince, while Senuran Muthusamy produced a spectacular 3 for 26 to dismantle Joburg's middle order. The visitors never built a substantial partnership, with none of their batters passing 30; they were bowled out for 117 in 18.1 overs. Sunrisers' pacers - Adam Milne, Anrich Nortje, and Marco Jansen - also chipped in, ensuring the home side secured their fourth bonus-point win of the season.
This victory not only solidifies Sunrisers' position at the top of the log with 24 points from eight matches but also guarantees them a playoff spot, giving them a strong chance of finishing in the top two. Joburg Super Kings, meanwhile, remain fourth with three points separating them from fifth-placed Durban's Super Giants. With Faf du Plessis sidelined for the remainder of the tournament, new captain Donovan Ferreira led the JSK effort admirably but could not prevent the comprehensive defeat.
Sunrisers now look ahead to the final two round-robin matches, first against MI Cape Town on Friday and then in a return fixture at home in Gqeberha on Sunday.
