Sinalo Jafta rules herself out of running for Proteas Women captaincy

Cricket South Africa will this week announce a new captain for the Proteas Women, ahead of Saturday’s departure for next month’s tour of Pakistan.

All-rounder Sune Luus unexpectedly stepped down from the post she held for an entire year in place of then-injured captain Dane van Niekerk, who has since retired.

While opening batter Laura Wolvaardt may be the obvious choice, or even all-rounder Marizanne Kapp, following vice-captain Chloe Tryon’s withdrawal from the tour, wicket-keeper Sinalo Jafta  has quickly dismissed the possibility when asked by SABC Sport.

"No, no, no. I think, for me now, it's to just focus on my game and contribute from behind the stumps – I think that's where I'm more powerful at the moment," said Jafta.

"Eventually [it's something to consider], but I think for now, just putting the team first and just being proper behind the stumps, I think that's my goal."

The 29-year-old proceeded to laud the leadership of Luus, who is said to have stepped so she may focus exclusively on improving her cricket performances rather than juggle leadership duties.

"For me, a leader is always just someone that can obviously implement – and it's all about action, like I think their action and everything that they do," she continued.

"I think with Sune stepping down, she's done a brilliant job in getting us into a World Cup final, and I mean the series before that – we've won a number of series under her.

"I wish her all the best, and the next captain coming in will kind of have to bring the same mindset [because] we want to be winners at the end of the day."
