Salman Agha says 'England outplayed us' after Pakistan fall to heavy Test defeat

Pakistan stand-in captain Salman Agha admitted 'England outplayed us' after the visitors fell to a mammoth innings and 103-run defeat inside three days in the first Test at Headingley.

The tourists were put on the back foot early in the game after being dismissed for 171 before England replied with 409, to take on 238-run lead.

Pakistan did not show the required fight that was needed to stay in the contest succumbed meekly with the bat second time around, being bowled out for 135 in 37.3 overs.

"Bowling, batting and fielding - England outplayed us," Agha said. "We were not consistent enough in any department. In England, consistency is important because there is lateral movement here, so you must be focused at all times.

"That was missing. And we think that missing consistency is what resulted in this performance."

Agha was standing-in as skipper for the injured Babar Azam, who the tourists hope will have recovered from his finger injury in time for the second Test that starts on Thursday at Lord's.

The visiting skipper tried to account for the heavy loss by suggesting Pakistan didn't have enough time to acclimatise to English conditions ahead of the tour as they spent 12 days preparing after arriving in the country.

"An England tour is challenging for any Pakistan side," Agha said. "We came into it from completely different conditions. It's not like we came here a month ago; we only came here a week ago. You may have seen a gulf in these sides.

"But when any Asian team comes here, they struggle early on. These conditions are not such you can adapt to within a week. But we're trying, and you'll see in the next game we'll turn in a better performance."
