Proud Marizanne Kapp on cusp of ODI milestone

Proud Marizanne Kapp on cusp of ODI milestone

Proteas Women stalwart Marizanne Kapp says she is proud of not only the career she has carved for herself, but also how far women’s cricket has come since her debut back in 2009.

This as she prepares to step onto the pitch and earn her 150th One Day International cap for South Africa, after missing out in the first match against the West Indies on Wednesday.

Kapp, widely considered one of the greatest all-rounders in women’s cricket, will likely start today’s match to become only the second Proteas Women player to reach the milestone after Mignon du Preez, who ended on 154 ODIs back in 2022.

"I'm extremely proud. I think. looking back not only on my career but on where women's cricket started and when I started playing for South Africa, I didn't even know there was international women's cricket," said Kapp.

"When I made my debut, I just thought, 'Ag, I'll give this a go,' even though I always absolutely loved cricket, I never thought women's cricket would end up here and I would still be playing.

"I think it's 15-16 years later, and I'm still here, so it's definitely a very proud moment and hopefully I've got a few more games in me."

In a career spanning 16 years, Kapp has amassed 3 116 runs at an average of 33.86, as well as 164 wickets with a best of 5/45 – against England during the 2022 World Cup.

"I feel like I've had a few good matches, I might not always have the wickets to show for it, but I think there've definitely been a few matches [that stand out]," she added.

"I think my first or second ODI World Cup I played it in India, I had a few good performances there, which I really enjoyed.

"My last 100 in India in a high-scoring match, so ja look, it's always a proud moment when I play for my country, so I can't single out one specific performance."
