Proteas Women trusting the process despite another loss

Proteas Women trusting the process despite another loss

Proteas Women batter Lara Goodall says they are not worried about immediate results, following their second defeat of the ODI tri-series in Sri-Lanka.

South Africa fell to a 5-wicket loss to the host nation, just a few days after being beaten by India at the same Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.

Goodall says they are trusting the process under coach Mandla Mashimbyi, and their target is the ICC Women’s World Cup later this year.

"As a team, we shouldn't be too hard on ourselves. We have a new coach, with new ideas, and I think trying to implement those ideas will take some time.

"Behind the scenes, we're doing the right things, it might just take a while before we express that on the field. We all know that we are in a transitional phase, but it's about trusting the process for now," said Goodall.

Goodall refused to put the blame on their bowling unit, after they failed to defend the 235 total they had put up batting first, and instead acknowledged that the pitch favoured the batting team as the match progressed.

"I think we have a world-class bowling attack, and I also believe that whatever we put on the board, our bowlers can defend it.

"It did start getting really hot towards the end of the day so it felt as though we were dragging ourselves to the finish line. Our bowlers applied the stock standard approach, when maybe the surface called for more variation," said a reflective Goodall.

The Proteas have struggled with the temperatures in the island nation, with teenager Karabo Meso having to go off with a heat-related illness in the match, while Tazmin Brits suffered cramp in their opening game against India.

Goodall says they just have to stay strong mentally and get on with it.

The left-hander, who was a late call-up to the squad in place of Anneke Bosch, was caught at long-on for 46, and says she played with the type of aggression that the team wants to adopt going forward.
