Proteas coach explains rationale behind selection for Namibia tour

The largely inexperienced 15-man side will then stay in Windhoek for a three-match ODI series after that, and Conrad says this is the perfect opportunity for the players to get some international mileage behind them. 

He’s opted to give most of his regulars an extended rest ahead of a busy and demanding summer which includes home series against Australia and England.

"One needs to take everything into account when a tour like this comes around. The big summer we have coming up obviously plays a part, and then whenever we have an opportunity to expose a few of our younger players and give some of our senior guys a bit of a break we have to take it because of what the summer entails."

The Proteas have played at the Namibia Cricket Ground before, when they faced the neighbours in a one-off T20 International to officially open the venue in October last year. 

"Naturally, fresh wickets get better and better the more they are played on, so I'm expecting nothing short of a really good facility because there are some really wonderful people involved in Namibian cricket. I'm expecting a top class facility with some top class competition."

The Proteas are without a doubt the more globally established of the three teams to feature in the upcoming tri-series, and Conrad says they have a responsibility to help grow the game in the neighbouring countries and the continent of Africa as a whole at every opportunity they get. 

South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia will also co-host the 2027 ICC Cricket World Cup set for October and November next year.
