Laura Wolvaardt pleased with series win after annihilating India

Laura Wolvaardt was in scintillating form with the bat last night as she led the Proteas Women to a dominant 9-wicket victory over India at the Wanderers, and in the process clinched the T20 International series with two matches still to play.

Wolvaardt equalled her highest score in the format, posting 115 runs as she and Suné Luus shared a match-winning 185-run opening partnership and chased down the visitors’ 192 with relative ease.

She says they had to put on a solid start with the bat to achieve that, and explained how they tried a few things with the ball earlier.

"I knew we had to start well chasing 190, so we had freedom in the power play to strike it nicely and then we just kept going.

"Obviously we were trying one or two different things with the ball. I think in Durban the slower stuff into the wicket worked quite well, but maybe didn't work as well tonight with the ball sliding on. I think we maybe could've gone to yorkers earlier and we missed our mark when we went to it."

Wolvaardt achieved her score in just 53 deliveries with 14 fours and five sixes. Not only was it the fastest century for the Proteas Women, but it also took her to 17 hundreds in women’s internationals – joint most with Meg Lanning and Smiriti Mandhana.

She spoke about what areas of her game she has worked on to get there.

"I'm striking it pretty nicely. My power hitting is something I've been working on these last couple of years, but finding the balance between whacking it and trying to still keep my strokes and the way that I play. Sometimes I lose it a bit by trying to hit it too hard and I lose my game, but I think I found the balance nicely tonight."

The 26-year-old also gave praise to Luus after their composed innings and were just 10 runs short of a 10-wicket victory. Luus hit the winning six runs to end off with 64, and Wolvaardt says she has been a breath of fresh air at the top of the order.
