Keshav Maharaj clear on T20 ambitions ahead of World Cup

Proteas left-arm spinner Keshav Maharaj has made it clear that he still has ambitions of playing T20 International cricket, despite being left out of the squad by coach Shukri Conrad for both the Zimbabwe and Australian series.

Maharaj is one of five players who have arrived in Cairns to join the team for the ODI series starting on Tuesday, but did confirm that he was also available for the shortest format.

He says the coach is trying new things and he supports him all the way.

"I am available for selection, but I think the coach wants to try something, and he hasn't closed the door completely so I'm hoping for an opportunity to show what I can do, but I understand that the coach has a plan, and I just hope to be part of his plans going forward," said the seasoned spinner.

He replied to questions on whether he’s considering dropping any of the formats, and in no uncertain terms, Maharaj does not plan to slow down anytime soon and still wants to play for South Africa in red and white ball cricket.

Maharaj went as far as declaring that he’s campaigning for a place in the squad for the T20 World Cup in India and Sri-Lanka next year.

The Proteas can use the expertise of the reigning CSA men’s Player of the Year in the sub-continent wickets, while he also has his eyes on the 50-over showpiece on home soil.

"The 2027 World Cup is a big target for me. I love playing ODI cricket, and what a special occasion it would be to be able to represent your country on home soil."

At 35 years of age, most cricketers tend to drop one or two of the formats to focus on one speciality.

He revealed that he’s been working hard on the physical aspect of his game to stay in top shape.
