Joe Root's record-breaking century puts England in total control against India

Root struck an imperious 150 as the England went to stumps on 544-7, a lead of 186 runs after bowling India out for 358 in the first innings.

It was Root's 38th hundred in his Test career and he has now go on to 13 409 runs, the innings taking him past India great Rahul Dravid and legendary South Africa all-rounder Jacques Kallis and former Australia captain Ricky Ponting in the all-time list.

The former England skipper is now 2 512 runs away from replacing India legend Sachin Tendulkar as Test cricket's highest ever run-scorer.

Ben Duckett scored 94 and Zak Crawley struck 84 as the duo shared in an opening partnership of 166 while home captain Ben Stokes was unbeaten on 77, looking to add to his tally on Saturday.

It would take something miraculous for India to avoid defeat with two days remaining, as England look to take an unassailable 3-1 lead in the five-match series.
