IPL: Ryan Rickelton stars as Mumbai Indians power to opening win over KKR

A blistering opening stand proved decisive as the Mumbai Indians chased down a daunting target to defeat the Kolkata Knight Riders by six wickets with five balls to spare in their IPL opener.

Set 221 for victory, Mumbai's pursuit was defined by a commanding 148-run opening partnership between Ryan Rickelton and Rohit Sharma, which came off just 71 deliveries.

Rickelton struck 81 from 43 balls, while Sharma powered his way to 78 off 38, the pair dominating from the outset as Mumbai raced to 80 without loss in the powerplay and 122 by the 10-over mark.

The milestone of 100 arrived in emphatic fashion when Rickelton launched Sunil Narine for six. Despite a brief wobble - Sharma falling to a sharp catch by Anukul Roy off Vaibhav Arora and Rickelton run out by a direct hit from Roy in a bizarre moment - Mumbai remained in control.

Contributions from Suryakumar Yadav (16), Tilak Varma (20) and an unbeaten 18 from Hardik Pandya ensured the chase was completed.

Earlier, Kolkata posted an imposing 220/4 after being sent in to bat. Ajinkya Rahane led the charge with 67 off 40 balls, while Angkrish Raghuvanshi added 51 from 29. Finn Allen provided early impetus with 37 off 17 as the visitors surged to 78/1 in the powerplay.

Key partnerships, including a 69-run stand between Allen and Rahane and a rapid 60-run effort between Raghuvanshi and Rinku Singh, powered the innings. However, Shardul Thakur swung momentum back with 3/39, removing Allen, Cameron Green and Rahane in a decisive spell.

Ultimately, it was a night of duelling half-centuries, but Mumbai's explosive start proved the difference.
