Coetzee was preferred over Corbin Bosch and Dane Paterson for the final seamer berth swith the rest of the home XI reaming the same after the victory in the second Test at St George's Park.
Nortje broke down midway through his fourth over in the first innings in Gqeberha, and has subsequently been ruled out with a groin injury.
Bavuma confirmed that Coetzee was selected in the XI as he is the closest in terms of pace to Nortje, and would play the "enforcer" role in the bowling attack.
"I think he's probably the closest guy in terms of like-for-like for Ana (Nortje)," Bavuma told the media. "In terms of the role Ana plays in a bowling attack as an enforcer, Gerald does have an extra bit of pace.
"I think he has to consider the fact that he hasn't played (Test cricket) for a while. He's been with the team, getting his work loads in, and he's a guy who I believe has the ability to make a big play for the team."
The rest of the Proteas line-up will remain unchanged with Aiden Markram set to open the batting with Marques Ackerman, who made his debut in the previous Test.
David Bedingham will continue at number 3 followed by Bavuma, who hit a career-best century at St George's Park, with Matthew Breetzke again at number 5.
Ryan Rickelton will play his second Test as wicketkeeper at number 6 in the batting line-up, with allrounder Wiaan Mulder coming in at number 7, while Marco Jansen and spinner Simon Harmer will be at 8 and 9 respectively, and Coetzee and Kagiso Rabada completing the home team.
