David Miller, Quinton de Kock return to Proteas ODI squad for Australia series

David Miller and Quinton de Kock have been included in the Proteas ODI squad for the three-match series at home against Australia that starts later this month.

Miller and De Kock do not have CSA contracts but the inclusion of both veterans is a clear indication the duo will form part of the plans heading into next year's ODI World Cup that will hosted in South Africa.

Aiden Markram will miss the first ODI against the Aussies due to personal issues, while Tristan Stubbs, Ryan Rickelton, Matthew Breetzke, Tony De Zorzi, Miller and De Kock provide a powerful batting unit that will be captained by Temba Bavuma.

Kagiso Rabada will miss the series after picking up a hamstring injury while training, but fast bowler Gerald Coetzee makes a comeback to the 50-over format after last playing at the 2023 World Cup.

The pace contingent will be bolstered by Marco Jansen, Lungi Ngidi, Corbin Bosch, Kwena Maphaka and Ottneil Baartman while the selectors have opted to include two spinners with senior figure Keshav Maharaj joined by Bjorn Fortuin, who is leading a second-string outfit in Namibia.

The Australia ODI series will start in Durban on 24 September, and will kick off a busy home summer for the Proteas that includes incoming tours from Bangladesh and England.

Proteas head coach Shukri Conrad said: "It's exciting to start our home summer against Australia in what will no doubt be a competitive series.

"With the World Cup just over a year away, this series marks an important step in shaping the squad as we build towards the tournament, while also giving those players who are in the frame opportunities when we face Bangladesh and England later in the season.

"We have a clear idea of the combinations we want and the roles we need players to fulfill.

"From a batting perspective, we've looked at making sure we have a middle order that can be explosive but have the ability to absorb pressure and take the innings quite deep. That balance is going to be important for us."

Proteas ODI squad: Temba Bavuma (captain), Ottneil Baartman, Corbin Bosch, Matthew Breetzke, Gerald Coetzee, Quinton de Kock, Tony de Zorzi, Bjorn Fortuin, Marco Jansen, Keshav Maharaj, Kwena Maphaka, Aiden Markram, David Miller, Lungi Ngidi, Ryan Rickelton, Tristan Stubbs
