Cricket World Cup 2023 fixtures, format and venues

The 2023 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup returns to the cricket-mad nation of India for the fourth time since its inception in 1975.

The impassioned hosts are aiming for their third World Cup title and would like to repeat their success of 2011, where they hosted the tournament and were led to victory by talisman MS Dhoni, who achieved godly status with his man-of-the-match performance against Sri Lanka in the final.

The opening ceremony for the 13th edition of the tournament is set to take place in the epic 132,000-seater Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on 4 October.

The 2023 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup officially gets underway the next day when - in a replay of the truly incredible 2019 Cricket World Cup final - reigning world champions England take on New Zealand at the same ground.

Heartbreak heroes South Africa face Sri Lanka in their first encounter at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi on 7 October, where the Proteas will be eager to rid themselves of any pre-tournament jitters.

Hosts India will begin their World Cup campaign against five-time world champions Australia in a blockbuster fixture in Chennai, where their fanatic following will undoubtedly be in full song.

It’s worth mentioning that there will also be five Group Stage matches played at the picturesque HPCA Stadium in Dharamshala.

Nestled in the foothills of the snow-capped Himalayas, it is considered one of the most beautiful cricket grounds in the world.

Cricket World Cup 2023 format and venues

The top four teams on the points table will advance to the knockout stage of the global showpiece, which involves two semi-finals.

The first is to be played at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on 15 November, while the iconic Eden Gardens plays host to the second semi-final the next day in Kolkata.

Thankfully, the knockout fixtures have reserve days in case of inclement weather.

It’s then back to the impressive Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad for the 2023 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup final on Sunday 19 November, where the world champions will be crowned and awarded a cool $4million for their efforts.
