Ayabonga Khaka highlights return to basics ahead of World Cup

Proteas Women bowler Ayabonga Khaka has acknowledged that things didn’t quite go their way on the New Zealand tour, with the plan now to return to basics on home soil.

Khaka continued where she left off Down Under as she led the Proteas Women to a six-wicket victory over India in the first of five T20 Internationals in Durban last night.

Khaka’s bowling figures of 3/16 earned her the player-of-the-match accolade, as she highlighted that keeping it simple proved the correct approach.

"I think, to be honest, we have preparing well as a side and we just had to come today and execute as a bowling unit – we're coming from New Zealand where some days it didn't go well for us, so today it was all about us coming to be simple," said Khaka.

"That's what we spoke about as a team in the morning, we just [have to] come here and bowl and be simple in whatever it is that we do."

The 33-year-old says they had a pretty good idea what their shortcomings were against the White Ferns and thus put a lot of emphasis in the nets on correcting those areas.

"I think, to be honest, it was a short time – something that we are not used to, but I think for the last three days, we've had tough sessions either with the bat, the ball or the fielding," she noted.

"I think we knew after New Zealand what went wrong and I think today was all about us coming to improve on those things."
