I cried on the phone: Tebogo Macheke on Proteas Women call-up

Proteas Women wicketkeeper-batter Tebogo Macheke has revealed that she could not hold back her emotions when she received the call to report for national team duty.

The Titans player comes into the set-up in place of injured Karabo Meso, who has sustained a wrist injury ahead of the five-match T20 series against India starting tomorrow.

Macheke admitted to being shocked by the call from Convenor of Selectors Clinton du Preez.

"It was, I honestly didn't believe it. I was shocked, I was crying, already I was crying on the phone. I was telling the Convenor Selectors that I want to cry and he said, yeah, you can cry and I cried. Oh my gosh, it was so amazing, unbelievable, so yeah," Macheke said.

The 25-year-old says it has been her life-long dream to be part of the senior team, and looked up to the likes of former captain Mignon du Preez and legendary wicketkeeper Trisha Chetty.

She also kept herself within the national team feeder systems like the Under-19s and Emerging teams in order to stay in contention for senior selection.

"It means a lot obviously as a young cricketer I always wanted to represent my country from an early age. So, I made sure that even when I was young playing in the U19s I made sure that I'm part of the SA U19s,” she added.

“I wanted to represent my country so badly when I was young. So, I idolised the likes of Mignon, the likes of Trish and yeah."
