Aiden Markram loses Sunrisers Hyderabad captaincy ahead of 2024 IPL season

Proteas T20 skipper Aiden Markram has been replaced as captain of Sunrisers Hyderabad by Pat Cummins ahead of the 2024 Indian Premier League (IPL) season.

Markram led the Sunrisers to just four wins in 14 matches in the IPL last year while he only scored 248 runs at a strike rate of 129 and remains part of the squad.

The Proteas batter led the Sunrisers Eastern Cape to a second consecutive SA20 title earlier in the South African summer but it was not enough to retain the leadership reins for the Indian domestic tournament.

The Sunrisers bought Cummins for a record price at the IPL auction and his captaincy appointment comes after a successful period of leading Australia to victory in the World Test Championship (WTC) and the 2023 ODI World Cup.

In addition to the latest captaincy change, Sunrisers Hyderabad have also named a new head coach, with former New Zealand left-arm spinner and captain Daniel Vettori taking over from Brian Lara.

Dale Steyn has also been replaced as bowling coach at the Indian franchise by James Franklin after the former Proteas paceman requested some time off.
