Xabi Alonso: Real Madrid ready for Dortmund showdown in FIFA Club World Cup

Real Madrid are set to lock horns with Borussia Dortmund in the FIFA Club World Cup quarter-finals on Saturday evening at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

The clash promises to be a thrilling encounter between two European heavyweights, with both sides eager to secure a semi-final spot.

Manager Xabi Alonso addressed the media at MetLife Stadium, offering insights into Real Madrid's preparations. He began with a heartfelt message, saying, "Before I answer, I'd like to send my deepest condolences to the family of Diogo Jota and Andre Silva. It's devastating news that makes you reflect. As for the match, we're in good shape. Dortmund are one of Europe's elite, and it'll be an intense game. We need to perform at our best to progress."

On the availability of Kylian Mbappe, Alonso provided an optimistic update. "He's feeling better and has trained well over the past three days. We'll make a final decision tomorrow morning," he said. When asked about the possibility of pairing Mbappe with Julian Alvarez, Alonso was open to the idea. "It depends on the moment and our needs. They're complementary players, and I wouldn't rule it out if the situation calls for it."

Alonso also responded to a question about whether he'd stake his coaching credentials on a bold prediction, as his predecessor Carlo Ancelotti once did. With a smile, he said, "Ancelotti could afford to say that after all he's achieved. I'm just starting out, so I can't take such risks! But I will say Federico Valverde will score plenty of goals for us."

Discussing his tactical approach, Alonso highlighted the versatility of Aurelien Tchouameni. "I'd watched him a lot, but getting to know him up close is different. He's intelligent and adapts quickly to concepts. His role in midfield is crucial for us to control that area," he explained. On the potential use of three centre-backs, he added, "Time's been tight, but Tchouameni's hybrid role gives us flexibility. It opens up different options depending on the phase of play."

Addressing his attacking options, Alonso confirmed his faith in his forwards. "I'm counting on all three. Endrick Felipe is recovering, but we're focused on immediate performance, not long-term planning. We'll make decisions as we go," he said.

On the topic of potential rule changes, such as time-outs in football, Alonso was cautious. "I'm not sure if I'd support it. Anything that disrupts the flow of the game needs careful consideration. In normal circumstances, I'm not convinced it's the best idea," he remarked.

Providing a squad update, Alonso noted, "The line-up will be the same. Eduardo Camavinga is improving, but tomorrow is too soon. Eder Militao and Daniel Carvajal are building up their training."
