Why beating Chiefs matters to Cape Town City - Keet

Cape Town City will be closing their 2022/23 DStv Premiership season away to Kaizer Chiefs in what many might consider a 'dead rubber', but goalkeeper Darren Keet feels otherwise.

While the top-two and relegation battles take centre stage this weekend, The Citizens, currently in the fifth spot, want to leapfrog Amakhosi into fourth not only for a morale boost but for the perfect reason.

Keet highlights that their season-ending fixture may become their season-opening encounter, and Saturday's clash at FNB Stadium will decide the home team.

There's no better team that you wanna come up against to end off your season with a bang, against a so-called 'big team'. The spot we're playing for is a home MTN8 spot also. If we finish fourth we play Chiefs at home in the MTN8 next season, that's a bonus. The club gets a little bit more of a reward from the league if they finish fourth, rather than fifth. [So] there's a lot of things at stake here, there's a lot of things to play for and the most important thing is you wanna out with a bang, beating Chiefs away, at their stadium. Definitely a big one and we just wanna go for it, and finish the league on a high," he told SABC Sport.

After ending last season as runners-up to Mamelodi Sundowns, Keet admits City have been a far cry from the side that clinched CAF Champions League qualification.

"It's kinda been an up and down season. A bit of inconsistency, and a couple of injuries, here and then it didn't help. But, it's just been one of those seasons where you're expected to do a lot better than we did, because of where we finished last season. Even though it's been up and down for us we're still in reach of our objectives this season. We've got one game to go and we're still in reach of our targets."

Elaborating a bit more on what their targets for this season entailed, the former Bidvest Wits shot-stopper explains why it remains one they can be satisfied with.

"You wanna try and improve on the previous season, and finishing second it's always going to be a tough task to compete with Sundowns, but to try and finish in the same position again would've been a massive bonus. With a team like Cape Town City, a top four is always the objective, it's always our target to make sure we can finish in the top four and hopefully push for a CAF spot, but unfortunately, that's out of the question at the moment for this season, but the top four spot is still there for the taking."
