'We're on the right track' - Joao Cancelo targets Champions League title with Barcelona

The Portuguese defender played the full 90 minutes as Barcelona began their European campaign with a convincing victory, giving him an important opportunity to make his mark after limited involvement at the start of the season.

Cancelo admitted that winning the Champions League with Barcelona is one of his biggest ambitions and believes the club have taken an important first step.

"It's always special to play at home and in this competition because I'm keen to win it with Barcelona," Cancelo said.

"We will do everything we can to achieve that. There's still a long way to go. We have to take it step by step, but we're on the right track."

Barcelona were determined to respond after their disappointing Champions League campaign last season, and Cancelo felt the victory over Feyenoord was exactly the start they needed.

"We had to get off on the right foot. Last year we were left with a bit of a bitter taste in our mouths in this competition," he said.

"It was important to win; we did so and, what's more, we put in a great performance."

The match was also significant for Cancelo personally. He had not started any of Barcelona's previous matches and had played only around 30 minutes in La Liga before being handed his opportunity in Europe.

After completing the entire match, the defender will hope the performance can lead to a more regular role as Barcelona compete on several fronts.

Cancelo also backed Lamine Yamal to win the Ballon d'Or, giving the teenager a strong endorsement after his impressive performances.

"The only player who deserves to win the Ballon d'Or is Lamine Yamal," Cancelo said.

Barcelona now turn their attention back to La Liga, with Levante the next opponents at the Estadio Ciudad de Valencia on Sunday.
