Virgil van Dijk hails Liverpool's resilience after one-goal win at Forest

Virgil van Dijk said Liverpool's hard-fought 1-0 victory over Nottingham Forest on Sunday demonstrated the side's enduring strength of character after a difficult first-half.

Forest registered 12 shots before the interval, the most Liverpool have conceded in the first half of a Premier League match since 2015. Head coach Arne Slot described the opening period as the "worst half" his team had produced this season.

Liverpool improved markedly after the break. Curtis Jones forced a reaction save from Stefan Ortega early in the second half, though it proved to be the visitors' only shot on target in the first 89 minutes.

Alexis Mac Allister thought he had broken the deadlock when he found the net, only for the effort to be ruled out for offside. However, the midfielder would not be denied, striking in the 97th minute to secure all three points.

It marked the third time this season Liverpool have claimed a league win in injury time.

"I think the resilience has definitely been questioned at times this season, but I think today, and the last couple of games especially, we have shown a consistency in everything we do, apart from the first half today," Van Dijk told reporters.

"But like I say, football is not 45 minutes, it is 90-plus minutes, and that showed today."

Asked if the win showed Liverpool's determination, he added: "I fully agree with that because when the goal is disallowed, the momentum shifts and the [Forest] fans are fully behind it, they may believe this is the opportunity to bounce back after a little bit of disappointment they had.

"But I think we did well, we created the chaos with the throw-ins we had, and we managed to score the winner."
