Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has suggested that the upcoming transfer window will be a pivotal one for the club, as they seek to build upon a highly successful inaugural season under head coach Arne Slot.
Van Dijk, who scored a decisive late goal in Liverpool's recent victory over West Ham United, played a crucial role in extending the Reds' lead to 13 points over second-placed Arsenal. With just six matches remaining, Slot's side now require a maximum of six points to secure Liverpool's 20th league title - an achievement that Van Dijk believes could mark the beginning of a new era of sustained success.
"I believe Liverpool should be competing for titles in the years ahead," Van Dijk said following Sunday's match. "Regardless of the changes in personnel-players departing or arriving-I think it is shaping up to be a significant summer. The club appears to be preparing accordingly, and as someone deeply connected to Liverpool, I trust the board will make the right decisions."
While Van Dijk's current contract is set to expire at the end of the season, sources have indicated that the Dutch international is expected to sign a two-year extension, following Mohamed Salah's contract renewal through 2027, announced last Friday.
When asked about his own future, Van Dijk remained measured in his response.
"Let's see how the week unfolds," he said. "At the moment, our attention should rightly be on the Hillsborough anniversary. I've spoken about it in previous interviews - it's the most important focus. Then comes Leicester, and maybe there will be an update. I know, but I don't know."
Reflecting on his journey at Liverpool since his arrival in 2017, Van Dijk spoke with heartfelt pride about his connection to the club.
"I joined Liverpool for many reasons-the passion of the Scousers, the global fanbase, the significance of the club's identity. Being part of this team and contributing to its success is something I hold very dear."
